Edmonton – December 1, 2009. On September 18, 2009, 43 Alberta schools participated in the inaugural KidSport Day. As a result of this initiative, 9761 participants from K-9 across the province participated in a modified version of Athletics Canada’s Run, Jump, Throw program. The Run, Jump, Throw program emphasizes basic physical activity and movement skills in an easy to execute curriculum. This was the largest one-day Run, Jump, Throw event held in Alberta in 2009.
“We were thrilled with how our first KidSport Day came together. Getting youth active is important to their physical and social development and well-being, and we look forward to growing this program and reaching even more kids next year”, said Diane Jones-Konihowski, Provincial Chair of KidSport Alberta and c-chair of KidSport Canada.
Participating schools also had the opportunity to enter their KidSport Day Subway Photo Contest with the chance of winning a SUBWAY school lunch and Run, Jump, Throw equipment bags. Below are the 2009 prize recipients:
- Holy Cross (Grand Prize Subway School Lunch Winner)
- Dan Knott (Equipment Bag Valued at $600)
- West Glen (Equipment Bag Valued at $400)
- JJ Bowlen (Equipment Bag Valued at $300
- Rundle School (Equipment Bag Valued at $200)
KidSport Day was founded as part of a new provincial initiative created by KidSport Alberta and Athletics Alberta, and is supported by the Premier’s Council on Arts and Culture and the Ministry of Culture and Community Spirit. Funding for KidSport Day was made possible by the Alberta Sport, Recreation Parks and Wildlife Foundation and the Subway restaurant chain, who has signed a 3-year commitment to support the program across Alberta.
About KidSport Alberta
KidSport is a national non-profit organization that gets kids off the sidelines and into the game by helping overcome the financial barriers that prevent some young people from participating in sport. Since the launch in 1995, KidSport Alberta has assisted over 31,000 kids to become involved in sports programs who would not have been able to afford to play without the help of KidSport. Input needed to help improve physical activity opportunities for Albertans!
The Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), through its Community Sport Development Task Group, needs your input to help improve physical activity opportunities for Albertans.
Please assist us by completing this survey by Friday, September 25th:
Click here to complete the survey!
It will take about 10 minutes of your time. Your input will help determine the most promising ways community recreation and parks departments can facilitate and advance CS4L.
The National Recreation Statement (Interprovincial Sport and Recreation Council, Sept. 1987) states “recreation includes all of those activities in which an individual chooses to participate in [their] leisure time and is not confined solely to sport and physical recreation programs but includes artistic, creative, cultural, social and intellectual activities.”
Building on the National Recreation Statement, the Canadian Sport Policy was created and signed by the Federal, Provincial and Territorial governments in 2002. Using these policies, the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) model was introduced in 2005 as a framework for all Canadians to develop a lasting and positive relationship with physical activity.
Bringing CS4L to Alberta requires the contributions of many: parents, teachers, educators, coaches, municipal recreation administrators and programmers, among others, must work together to promote positive physical activity experiences in our local school, sport and recreation communities.
If you have any questions about this survey or the work of ARPA’s Community Sport Development Task Group, please contact Denise Gariépy at dgariepy@arpaonline.ca or (780) 644-1779.
Thank-you for your assistance in completing this survey!

Hey folks,
I have a bit of a conundrum that I am hoping to get your help with. There is a charity that wants to run a fund-raising hockey tournament on our outdoor rinks to raise money for research. The tournament would start as a one day event at one facility, but could grow over time (they would like to run an annual event). They would like to charge $200 per person to play, so there is a bit of a public access issue. Our outdoor rinks are open for approximately 12 weeks and we typically do not permit them for a full day because of the public access issue. I am finding that the discussion comes down to a bit of a debate about what business we are in and what our role should be, so it can be sort of interesting. The basics are as follows:
1 – we typically do not permit our outdoor rinks for full day events because of the short length of the season and the fact that outdoor hockey is considered one of our fundamental services.
2 – the charity has very little expertise in running a hockey tournament, but is willing to put in the effort to raise money by finding teams (at $200 a head). We could easily handle the logistics. So, there is a partnership opportunity.
If any of you have had any experience in supporting or hosting an event similar to this could you please share your strategy or story with me. I am hoping your comments and expertise will help me with my follow up with the interested group.

On November 26th, 2009 the Recreation for Life Foundation, its allied partner, the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association (ARPA), and their many sponsors and supporters will present the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence at the inaugural showcase event.
The Awards will recognize and celebrate individuals or working groups within Alberta’s corporate and business sector for their creativity, innovation, excellence and overall contribution in designing, building, and providing services to support recreation, parks and wellness in our province and its communities.
It is of the utmost importance that we are able to apprise the Alberta Recreation and Parks Association stakeholders about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence. We expect that they will be very interested in this awards program and may, in fact, be a major source of award nominations. We are hopeful that you will be able to assist us with the dissemination of information about our awards program and the showcase event itself.
Specifically, we are requesting that the ARPA membership, through its outreach communication channels, promote to their colleagues and affiliates the Recreation for Life Foundation’s Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence by:
- informing your colleagues and affiliates about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence through various communication channels;
- distributing sponsorship opportunities in support of this event;
- passing on further electronic communiqués provided by the Foundation; and
- posting a link to the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence on your website to enable your associates and affiliated organizations to learn more about the awards program nomination and registration process.
We are expecting to launch this exciting awards program in June in hopes that the nomination deadline of August 28th will render multiple nominations in all of the six award categories.
Should you have any questions about the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence program please contact the Recreation for Life Foundation office. Please visit the following links to view the Recreation Industry Awards of Excellence brochure, nominations form, and sponsorship opportunities. All of these materials may also be viewed on the Awards website at www.Awards.RecreationforLife.org.
We are currently seeking sponsorship support and would greatly appreciate any support to any one of the many sponsorship opportunities.
Thank you in advance for your consideration and expedient action to this request as we move forward in disseminating the necessary information.
Sincerely,
Randall Conrad,
Committee Chair
